Chapter 18. Murder
The lights of the bar pierced her eyes, her pupils flashed, and feeling the noisy chaos in her ears, she walked out of her memories, looking up at the messy people with indifference, unaware that a crystal clear tear had passed through the corner of her eye.
She sat at the bar with one hand supporting her head, and swiped her phone with the other hand to open her Moments, flipping through them randomly. Suddenly, her eyes flashed, and she saw a photo of the airport sent by Shen Xi, located in S City. She thought that he should have returned after looking for his wife.
She didn't expect that a calm person like Shen Xi would post on WeChat Moments, and if she is not mistaken, the company's annual leave has just been over for a week. Coming back so early, isn't he going to spend some sweet time with his wife? Or did his wife come back with him?
Yi Ruo smiled and ignored him. She turned off her phone and put it in her bag. She stood up dazed and walked out of the bar drunkenly.
Looking at the sky near midnight, she stood by the roadside, light and shadow shining across her body. A piece of white veil was gently blown by the river breeze, leaving only her graceful shadow at her feet. Some people were hurrying along, and when they looked up occasionally they could not help being mesmerized by the beautiful sunset scenery, so they stopped for a moment and walked slowly past.
Yi Ruo stood by the river for a while, feeling the cool breeze. When her mind became a little clearer, she opened the car door and got in. Soon the car slowly drove out of the intersection.
The music flowing from the speakers caressed the silent carriage softly, but suddenly there was a burst of incongruous noise and vibration.
"Buzz...Buzz..."
The cell phone thrown aside was shaking a little impatiently, rubbing against the leather on the passenger seat and making a sound.
Yi Ruo glanced to the right and saw the call name: "Uncle".
She paused slightly, slowed down the car, picked up the phone with one hand, hesitated for a moment, and answered it.
"Hello?...Yi Ruo, I just heard someone say that you...paid off the money?" A slightly cautious voice came from the other side. She hadn't heard her uncle's voice for a long time. He now sounded older and more tired than before.
"I told you, no matter if you haven't paid it back yet, don't contact me again." Yi Ruo was slightly absent-minded, holding the steering wheel tightly with one hand.
When she wasn't paying attention, her hands on the steering wheel shifted slightly and she unconsciously turned into a dark alley. The whole environment darkened, but she didn't notice.
"No... I just want to care about you..."
Yi Ruo felt her head hurting more and more. She glanced at her phone, stopped talking, and reached out to hang up the call.
Hearing that the girl on the other side didn't answer, the man seemed to have sensed something and hurriedly said: "You...you don't hang up first. Uncle, uncle just..."
Before he finished speaking, there was a sudden "bang" sound of something colliding. Yi Ruo came back to her senses and quickly stepped on the brakes.
The front of the car seemed to have hit something. She hung up the phone, looked at the deserted alley, frowned, held the phone tightly, got out of the car, and walked around to the front of the car.
She saw a girl falling on the road, and all the flowers in the basket fell to the ground. She fell on her head, and blood slowly flowed out from the back of her head, which looked very thick in the dark street. Her other hand seemed to be trying to hold something tightly.
Yi Ruo looked at the person on the ground blankly, took a few steps back and sat down on the ground, as if the scene from five years ago appeared before her eyes again.
A patch of blood.
Her mind went blank. She stood up hastily, ran back into the car, and turned around and left in a panic.
Only after driving all the way back home did Yiruo calm down, with trembling hands, not knowing what to do.
Why...why...all the bad news has just passed, and now she is being treated like this...she is tired of struggling helplessly in the quagmire...
Just when she was confused and helpless, she touched the bag in her hand, and in an instant she thought of the man whose eyes were always calm but warm and gentle. With trembling hands, she picked up the phone, opened the address book, found the man's name, and pressed it.
"Yi Ruo?" The gentle but slightly tired voice of the man opposite rang out from the phone, like salvation.
Shen Xi had just gotten out of the car, picked up his suitcase, opened the door and went into the house. He poured a glass of water and was about to lie down on the sofa to rest, but his cell phone rang at this time.
Looking at the caller note, Shen Xi was a little surprised. He raised his hand and clicked the answer button. Hearing the girl on the other end remain silent, he said softly:
"Yi Ruo?"
There was a faint sobbing sound from the other side. Shen Xi stood up and frowned, "What's wrong? What happened?"
"Shen Xi... Shen Xi... What should I do... What should I do..."
Hearing Yi Ruo's panicked and helpless voice, calling his name contrary to her usual practice, Shen Xi picked up the car keys and walked out the door.
"Don't be anxious, where are you now? Are you in danger?"
"I...I killed someone...wuwuwu, I killed someone...." the girl opposite said helplessly.
Shen Xi paused for a moment, then quickly walked into the car and started the engine.
"Don't cry, tell me what happened." Shen Xi said soothingly.
Hearing Shen Xi's steady voice, Yi Ruo gradually calmed down and told him what happened in a fragmentary manner.
After listening to her, Shen Xi comforted her with a few words and asked her to wait in the room for him to come over. He hung up the phone, frowned, called Secretary Chen with one hand, and drove to Yi Ruo's apartment with the other.
"Please ask someone to help me see if there is an injured girl lying on the street, and send her to the hospital to see how she is. If she is just injured, go and discuss with her family to see how to deal with it. If there is an accident..." Shen Xi paused, "Notify me immediately."
After hearing the reply from the other end, Shen Xi hung up the phone, turned the steering wheel and drove into the apartment building.
---
'Knock knock'
Shen Xi knocked gently on the door.
After a while, the door opened, and Yi Ruo saw Shen Xi standing outside the door. The night light shone on his back, dimming his front, leaving only his sturdy figure. She rushed over and hugged him tightly.
Shen Xi looked at Yi Ruo, who was wearing thin clothes and had red and swollen eyes. He hugged her tightly in his arms and comforted her, "It's okay, it's okay, I'm here."
Listening to the gentle voice in her ears, Yi Ruo buried her head in Shen Xi's arms, leaning against the man's body and still trembling slightly.
After Yi Ruo calmed down a little, Shen Xi helped Yi Ruo into the room.
- In the apartment -
Yi Ruo sat on the sofa, with Shen Xi's coat still draped over her shoulders, a warm cup of water in her hands, her eyes staring blankly at the ground with no focus.
Shen Xi looked at Yi Ruo with fondness, stretched out his hands to gently hold her in his arms, bent down and put his head on her shoulder, smelling the faint fragrance of her hair.
Both of them waited silently for the call from the other end.
'Buzz.' . '
The phone in Shen Xi's pocket vibrated, and Yi Ruo's body stiffened. Shen Xi supported Yi Ruo's slightly stiff body, looked at her helpless eyes, and gently kissed the corner of her eyes.
He stood up and walked to the balcony.
Yi Ruo looked at Shen Xi's back, and as soon as she closed her eyes, the pool of blood on the road and the blood sprayed on the wall that year emerged in her mind, and the two scenes kept interweaving.
She tightened his suit jacket with both hands, not daring to close her eyes again, staring straight at Shen Xi who was holding the phone and talking with his head down.
After saying that, Shen Xi walked in, and seeing Yi Ruo looking at him stupidly, he smiled and raised his hand to touch Yi Ruo's hair.
"Secretary Chen said that the girl just had a head scratch and fainted. It's not serious. She has woken up now."
Yi Ruo still stared at him blankly without any reaction.
Shen Xi looked at Yi Ruo, knowing that she was still frightened tonight, so he helped her up and walked to the bedroom, gently put her on the bed, and said, "Go to sleep."
